Carlie is an emerita professor. She joined the faculty of Iowa State in 1986 after teaching in the public schools of California and Massachusetts for over two decades. She taught multicultural education courses and became program director for Dialogues on Diversity in 1996, and although she “retired” from Iowa State in 2002, she continued to direct the program until 2006. As a faculty member her activities included advising student organizations, implementing workshops on equity and diversity in education, and helping to facilitate international travel studies to India and South Africa. Carlie is the recipient of numerous University and community awards throughout her career as an educator and activist, including induction into the Iowa African American Hall of Fame. In 2008, she was elected as an Iowa delegate to the democratic national convention. Carlie has served on the Awards Review and Selection Committee and the Selection of Future Board Members Task Force.
