Kay is well known in central Iowa as the former director of the Des Moines Public Library, a position she held from 2001 to 2007. In that role, she oversaw the construction of a new $33 million Central Library and another $6 million of branch renovations for the city of Des Moines. Kay is now a public library building consultant. As an ISU student, Kay was a member of Alpha Delta Pi, served on the Stars Over Veishea Central Committee, and played in the ISU Symphonic Band. Since graduation, she has served Iowa State as a member of the Foundation Board of Governors, Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Advisory Board, and Stanton Carillon Foundation Board. She has served as president of both the Iowa Library Association and the Public Library Association of the American Library Association. She received the Iowa State Carrie Chapman Catt Award for Public Advancement in 2006 and the Des Moines Business Record’s Women of Influence Award in 2004. Kay serves on a number of boards, including the Iowa Public Radio Board. She has served on the Arts and Artifacts Committee; the Risk Management Task Force; the Task Force to Reconnect with Former Board Members (which has become the Leadership Guild), and has been the ISUAA landscaping liaison.
