Sophia Magill
Former ISU Government of the Student Body president Sophia Magill, a native of Charter Oak, Iowa, served as the inaugural chair of the Young Alumni Council. Recently married to John Tillo ('06 pol sci), Sophia moved from Ames to downtown Chicago, where John attends law school and Sophia is working toward her Masters in Public Administration at the University of Illinois – Chicago. Upon earning a bachelor's degree in political science in 2005, Sophia headed to Washington, D.C. through the Washington Center and interned for an NGO, Constituency for Africa. She then returned to Iowa to clerk in the Iowa House of Representatives. She also previously worked as project director for ISU Fraternity Tobacco Education, executive director of the Iowa Cultural Coalition, and outreach coordinator/volunteer liaison for Iowa's Office of the Governor. In May 2006, Sophia returned to her alma mater full-time as a senior admissions counselor/group visits coordinator for Iowa State University's Office of Admissions. Her academic, career, and civic activities have led her to Israel, Australia, Japan, Kenya, and France. Sophia has served in a variety of volunteer capacities, including but not limited to Junior League of Des Moines (Public Policy Chair 2006-07), the Greater Des Moines Partnership's Young Professionals Connection, Youth and Shelter Services Board of Directors and Foundation Board (Public Policy Chair 2005-08), Generation Iowa Commission and the ISU Alumni Association. She is a member of the Society of VEISHEA Alumni and Friends and is active with the Chicago Alumni Club and Alpha Gamma Delta Chicago Alumni Club. While an ISU student, Sophia was extremely involved, most notably as a representative for the student body on the Task Force for Assuring Successful VEISHEA and Other Student/Community Celebrations that helped chart the course for successful future VEISHEA celebrations. A Cardinal Key Scholar, Sophia is the former recipient of the ISUAA's Impact Award, the Memorial Union Board of Directors' Recognition of Service Award, and the ISU Division of Student Affairs' "Challenger" Award. As a graduate student, Sophia has continued her involvement serving as her department’s senator on the Graduate Student Council and as a graduate representative on the Executive Committee of the University of Illinois – Chicago Senate. |
