Donna Whitney 2009

Donna Whitney

Los Altos Hills, Calif.

Donna Whitney became affiliated with Iowa State University through her husband, Tom, a three-time graduate of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Tom was the lead engineer on the world’s first-ever electronic calculator (HP-35) and was employee number 15 at Apple, Inc., playing a major role in the development of both the Apple II and Macintosh computers.

After Tom’s untimely death in 1986, Donna remained active with Iowa State, even though she did not attend the institution. She continued her husband’s legacy by establishing the Thomas M. Whitney Professorship of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The professorship has supported the department’s strong research program, particularly in the fields of non-destructive evaluation and solar energy research.
Whitney has continued to be a very active and regular supporter of the College of Engineering, including the State Science and Technology Fair, the Whitney Engineering Museum in Howe Hall, and the FIRST LEGO League. She regularly visits the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, ensuring that she is up-to-date on the department’s research activities and progress.
Whitney is president of the Thomas and Donna Whitney Education Foundation. The Foundation’s primary focus is the support of teachers and students in public schools. One project of note is RAFT (Resource Area for Teachers), a non-profit organization that serves 8,000 teachers and 600,000 students annually by providing materials and ideas to enhance education and to support professional growth using recycled materials.
She holds a diploma R.N. from Iowa Lutheran School of Nursing in Des Moines and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from San Jose State University.
An ISU Foundation Governor, Whitney serves on the ISU Foundation’s Board of Directors and is a past secretary of that organization. She currently serves on the stewardship committee. She is a member of the Order of the Knoll W.M. Beardshear Society and Campanile Society. She is a life member of the ISU Alumni Association.
Whitney lives in Los Altos Hills, Calif., with her husband, Uwe Kladde. She is the mother of two children: Suzanne Smedt and Tom Whitney.
