Lowell Greimann

Lowell Greimann

BS 1964, Civil Engineering
Ames, Iowa

In his 31 st year as an Iowa State faculty member and 14 th year as chair of the department of civil, construction, and environmental engineering, Lowell Greimann travels the country to interact with alumni at receptions and personal visits. The semi-annual CCEE newsletter he implemented has reached alumni worldwide. His ability to put a face on the department, says former dean James Melsa, has re-connected alumni with their alma mater and significantly increased fund raising for the department. Greimann’s efforts to increase alumni giving through the 10-member “Our Town” committee have resulted in gifts that significantly expanded the laboratories in the Town Engineering Building, and the department is currently focusing on obtaining endowed chairs, professorships, and fellowships. Greimann’s focus on the fun and rewarding aspects of fund raising have energized civil, construction, and environmental engineering alumni in new ways.

Greimann began his teaching career at ISU in 1973 as an assistant professor. He was elevated to associate professor in 1977 and to professor in 1981. He has previously served as the division leader for structural engineering and spent one year as associate department chair before taking the leadership of CCEE in 1990. He has also served as associate manager of the Bridge Engineering Center since 1986. Greimann is a past recipient of Iowa State ’s David R. Boylan Emminent Faculty Award for Research, and he is member of the American Society of Engineering Education, the National Society of Professional Engineers, and is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. While his professional achievements are many, Greimann is most proud of his extensive involvement with his church and the Ames Town and Country Kiwanis Club. He is a member of ISU’s Order of the Knoll President’s Circle and is a life member of the Alumni Association.
