Gerald and Carol Hunter are Iowa State University’s ultimate ambassadors. They have motivated countless prospective students to attend the university they call their alma mater and inspired their fellow alumni to new levels of support for the institution.
Carol is a current member of the ISU Foundation board of governors and a former member of all of the following: the ISU Alumni Association board of directors, ISUAA Honors & Awards committee, ISU home economics alumni association board, ISU family and consumer sciences alumni board, ISUAA Club of Hamilton County, and Iowa 4-H Foundation board. She has been an active volunteer with the Alumni Association, including service to the Alumni Days 2008 50-year reunion planning committee. Carol is a member of the College of Human Sciences’ Ring of Life group who received the college’s Helen LeBaron Hilton Award in 1979. For her many years of dedicated service to 4-H, she was also awarded the Iowa 4-H Alumni Award in 1991.
Gerald is also a former ISU Alumni Association board member, as well as a past chair of the ISUAA Club of Hamilton County and a past president of the Hamilton County Cyclone Club. He and Carol have each received the Service Key Award from the ISUAA Club of Hamilton County.
In memory of their daughter, Karen, who died in 1990 while attending ISU, the Hunters endowed a scholarship in the College of Business from 1991-2009 that is now directed to ISU’s Student Alumni Leadership Council. They have made generous gifts to support the ISU Alumni Center, Jack Trice Stadium, the College of Human Sciences, Catt Hall, the Iowa State Center, ISU bands, and the 4-H Foundation. The Hunters are Reiman Gardens CoHorts and are active with the International Farm Youth Exchange (IFYE); Carol has served as an IFYE delegate and as co-chair of the organization’s national alumni conference.
Retired farmers, the Hunters are ISUAA life members and sustaining life donors, Order of the Knoll President’s Circle members, and Cyclone Club members. Gerald and Carol are the parents of the late Karen Hunter and of Karlene Bittner (’96 accounting).
