Barbara Mack 2011

Barbara M. Mack

BA Journalism ‘74
Des Moines, Iowa

For Iowa State’s journalism students and alumni, there is a go-to person for guidance: Barbara Mack, who has been a trusted mentor, teacher, and friend to ISU journalists for more than two decades.

Mack is one of three Master Teachers in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication. A top-notch attorney who earned her J.D. from Drake University in 1977, she is perhaps best known for her teaching of media law and ethics. In fact, many of Mack’s former students have become lawyers due to her influence.

Outside of the classroom, Mack is a strong ambassador for the Greenlee School and for the university. She recently played an instrumental role in establishing the Greenlee School’s Society of Alumni and Friends. She has organized countless alumni society events on campus, around the state, and across the nation. She remains in regular contact with many of her former students and constantly makes informal efforts to connect alumni to the university and to each other.

Mack, who served as general counsel for the Des Moines Register & Tribune Company from 1969-1987, currently holds the title of assistant director and associate professor in the Greenlee School. She is a member of the school’s promotion and tenure committee, undergraduate committee, and director’s advisory committee. She has served as an Iowa State Daily board member since 1999 and is also currently active with the Iowa Public Television editorial advisory board. From 1983-1987, Mack was a board member for the Young Women’s Resource Center.

She began phased retirement from Iowa State last year.
