Last August, Iowa State University faced a significant challenge when devastating floods filled some campus buildings with as much as 14 feet of water on the eve of the fall 2010 semester. Hilton Coliseum and the Scheman Building, in particular, were forced to close and undergo significant renovations to get up and running. A year later, the university has emerged grateful that it had an outstanding leader like associate vice president for facilities planning and management Dave Miller to lead it through this difficult situation.
Twelve days after the flood, ISU opened on schedule for classes. Remarkably, Hilton Coliseum re-opened for basketball season. Miller’s nominators agree that these achievements truly wouldn’t have been possible without the extensive knowledge and expertise, as well as the 27 years of experience and work with all of ISU’s top five floods, that Miller brought to the effort.
In all, Miller managed flood recovery efforts in 114 ISU facilities. He established processes for handling cleanup and for bringing utilities back on line. He worked with multiple campus entities, contractors, subcontractors, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency – including managing FEMA’s detailed documentation requirements. In fact, a FEMA representative recently commented that Iowa State University’s recovery, reporting, and mitigation effort was superior to any he had ever seen – a tremendous credit to Miller.
Miller is active in the community with Ames Morning Rotary, the Northcrest Inc., board, and the Story County Board of Adjustments. An officer with ISU’s 25-Year Club, Miller received the ISU Alumni Association’s Award for Superior Service to Alumni in 2003.
Miller and his wife, Laura Miller (MS ’93 mass communications), are annual members of the ISU Alumni Association. They have two sons: Matthew (’02 English, art history, & environmental ecology) and Michael.
