Lisa Koll Uhl

BS Biology ’08
Portland, Ore.

The remarkable collegiate athletics career of Lisa (Koll) Uhl captivated and inspired the Iowa State community and carved the Fort Dodge, Iowa, native a unique place in ISU’s history.

An 11-time NCAA All-American in cross country/track and field, Uhl is the sixth-fastest woman ever to run 10,000 meters, the seventh-fastest woman to ever run 5,000 meters, and the NCAA Division I record-holder in the 10K. While competing for the Cyclones, she became the first woman ever to win four consecutive Big 12 Conference titles in the same event (10,000 meters). In 2010, she received the Honda Sports Award recognizing her as the nation’s top female collegiate athlete in track and field. She was also a 2010 finalist for the prestigious Broderick and Bowerman Awards.

In 2010, Uhl was named both the Big 12 outdoor track and field female performer of the year and the league’s indoor performer of the year after also winning the outdoor performer of the year award in 2009. A four-time NCAA champion and two-time Drake Relays champion who finished eighth in the 10K trials for the 2008 Olympics and as 10K runner-up in the 2010 U.S. Track and Field Championships, Uhl concluded her ISU career as one of the university’s most decorated athletes of all time.

But listing Uhl’s achievements on the track only scratches the surface of her incredible college career. After graduating summa cum laude after only three years in Iowa State’s biology program, she was accepted to veterinary school and began work toward her D.V.M. degree while still competing for the Cyclones. A four-time academic All-American, she was named the 2008 Women’s Division I Outdoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the 2008-2009 NCAA CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American of the Year.

Uhl is now a professional runner training with Nike in Beaverton, Ore. She married her former ISU teammate, Kiel Uhl (’10 architecture), this summer.
