BA Political Science 2005
Ames, Iowa

Being president of the Government of the Student Body at a large public university is itself nearly a full-time job filled with numerous commitments and responsibilities. Sophia Magill, ever open to a challenge and an opportunity to be involved, was aware of this when she ran for and was elected to the position in 2004. What she did not anticipate, however, was being faced with an extensive controversial issue, in which she would devote numerous hours to a major community-wide task force, making tough decisions, asking and answering tough questions, and interacting heavily with the university administration and the City of Ames. Magill did all this and more during her term as ISU’s GSB president—a year spent largely dealing with the major decision of how to preserve the university’s annual VEISHEA tradition, and in the process she earned enormous amounts of respect from her peers, the ISU administration, and the Ames community. She welcomed the prospect to collaborate with others to shape a positive future for our community. Magill’s tireless work with the VEISHEA Task Force and the commissions dedicated to the future of VEISHEA helped elevate student awareness about the importance of preserving the event and bolster public confidence in ISU’s students.

Magill’s involvement as an Iowa State student has included serving GSB as both president and Panhellenic senator, ISU Dance Marathon, Cardinal Key, VEISHEA, Leadership ISU, ISU Fall Blood Drive, Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, Freshmen Council, the ISU Student Foundation Committee, and STARS (student admissions representatives). She also has been an active community member, through service on the Ames’ Youth & Shelter Services Board of Directors and the Story County Tobacco Task Force. She is a past recipient of the ISU Student Affairs “Challenger” Award, the Wallace E. Barron All-University Senior Award, and the ISU Student Alumni Leadership Council’s Senior Leadership Recognition Award. She is an annual member of the ISU Alumni Association.
