Ben Bruns 2010

Benjamin C. Bruns
BS Construction Engineering '01
Des Moines, Iowa
After helping build the Iowa State football program as a student-athlete, Ben Bruns has continued to build as an alumnus – not only in his career as a construction project manager for The Weitz Company, but also brighter futures for youth.
Bruns specializes in construction projects for educational institutions, including his alma mater. He oversaw both phases of construction at Jack Trice Stadium and served the ISU athletics department as construction administrator for the Sukup Basketball Complex. His excellence at his craft, coupled with his passion for the university, resulted in successful projects completed on time and under budget – even in the face of tight schedules and adverse weather conditions.
Bruns has also been involved in building opportunities and a successful program for the youth football players at West Des Moines Valley High School, where he is in his 10th season as a volunteer coach. He has also led several apartment makeovers for youth aging out of the foster care system as a volunteer with Children and Families of Iowa; today, he remains a youth advocate as a CFI board member. He chaired Weitz Iowa’s award-winning United Way campaign in 2001-2002, and he is currently a member of the United Way of Central Iowa’s Leadership Circle. In 2009, Bruns was honored as one of the Des Moines Business Record’s “40 Under 40” business leaders.
In addition to his professional and civic activities, Bruns is the football sideline reporter for the Cyclone Radio Network and a football color analyst for Mediacom Connections television network. He is a board member and past president of the ISU Letterwinners Club. He and his wife, Kate (journalism '99), are members of the Order of the Knoll Campanile Society and Cyclone Club and ISU Alumni Association annual members.
