Francis L. de los Reyes has devoted the last 17 years to researching wastewater engineering. In the process, he has discovered a passion for education, innovation, and using his talents to help lift the world’s poorest citizens out of poverty.
de los Reyes currently works as an associate professor of civil, construction, and environmental engineering at North Carolina State University. There he teaches classes on drinking water treatment, wastewater treatment plant design, and environmental microbiology. He has also worked on water and sanitation issues in developing countries and has active collaborations in India, China, Montenegro, and his native Philippines. In 2009, de los Reyes was awarded a prestigious TED Fellowship for having an idea “worth spreading” at www.ted.com. He is also a 2001 recipient of the U.S. National Science Foundation CAREER Award.
As a volunteer, de los Reyes has been equally successful. The organization has built more than 200,000 homes for the Philippines’ poorest poor.
An international consultant for industry, engineering firms, and public utilities, de los Reyes is a 1990 graduate of the University of Philippines-Los Banos, which presented him with its Outstanding Alumnus award in 2008. He also holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.
