Emily Puhl’s accomplishments at Iowa State University have been academic, personally enriching, and philanthropic. They have also been diverse. From volunteering to cook meals for the Emergency Residence Project to being named the ISU Marching Band’s “Marcher of the Year,” Puhl has embraced every opportunity to learn from, and give back to, her community. The LeMars, Iowa, native has received the President’s Award for Competitive Excellence, the Sojourner Study Abroad Scholarship, and the Alfred P. Kehlenbeck Scholarship at ISU while also being named to the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society. Her volunteer work has included spending time with children at local transitional housing, teaching English as a second language to immigrants, volunteering at a halfway house, participating in the “Stuff the Bus” Food Drive, and serving as a language interpreter for a medical mission trip to Honduras. She also dedicated herself to Spanish-English translation in Marshalltown, Iowa, offering assistance to working Latin Americans and their families, including students at Woodbury Elementary school. Her campus activities include Spanish Club, ISU Marching Band, ISU Concert Band, Tau Beta Sigma National Band Service Sorority, Freshman Honors Program seminar leadership, and the Oxfam Fast to Raise Awareness. She has also served as an usher and stage crew member for several ISU Department of Music events.
