2010 Alumni Directory

Iowa State University Alumni Directory -- 2010 Edition
FAQ

Updated July 6, 2009

Where can I call to make an update?
ISUAA members may call Publishing Concepts toll-free at 1-866-379-2042.
Nonmembers may call Publishing Concepts toll-free at 1-866-379-1528.

Is this a legitimate project?
Yes.  The ISU Alumni Association has contracted with PCI:  the data company (also known as Publishing Concepts) out of Dallas, Texas, to collect alumni information and to produce the 2010 print alumni directory. The call/e-mail/postcard you received was sent on our behalf.

What will the e-mail request look like?
The e-mail message you will receive will be sent from Jeffery W. Johnson, President and CEO, through the address Alumnidirectory.Iowastate@publishingconcepts.com. It will feature the ISU Alumni Association logo and Jeff Johnson's electronic signature.

If you receive any other suspicious e-mail messages requesting that you reply via e-mail to verify alumni information, these are likely scams. The only way the ISU Alumni Association is collecting updates for this project is through the toll-free number; the legitimate message will NOT ask you to reply via e-mail. If you have any questions about the legitimacy of an e-mail you receive, please feel free to contact the ISU Alumni Association toll-free at (877) ISU-ALUM (478-2586) or via e-mail to Scott Dahl at sdahl@alumni.iastate.edu.

Why do I need to update my information?

Why do I have to pay now if the Alumni Directory isn’t going to be published for some time?
To keep the price of the Alumni Directory down, PCI only publishes a volume of directories equal to the number of reservation orders that are received.  There is also a significant expense in following up with 210,000 alumni.

When will I receive my directory?
The total duration of the directory project is about 12 months. Since we began the project in April of 2009, the directories will be distributed in April of 2010.

Can I still purchase a directory after it is published?
No.  PCI will only be publishing directories for those who have pre-ordered.

Can anyone purchase a directory?
The 2010 Iowa State University Alumni Directory is available for sale only to Iowa State University alumni.

Who is PCI: the data company?
PCI, also known as Publishing Concepts is a Dallas, Texas-based company that creates and publishes alumni directories for educational institutions.

PCI has been in business more than 85 years and was the nation’s first publisher of alumni directories. PCI partners with 17 of the top 25 universities as rated by US News and World Report, including Princeton, Harvard, and Georgetown.

What safeguards do you have in place to ensure that the information in the directory is not misused by PCI or by an individual?
We make every effort contractually and through copyright laws to ensure the safety and confidentiality of information contained in the directory.

PCI has been a trusted partner of the ISUAA for 15 years.  They have agreed to a written confidentiality clause in our contract which limits the use of the information contained in the directory to functions directly related to the preparation and promotion of the 2010 ISU Alumni Directory.  Upon completion of the project, PCI will return to the ISUAA all files that have been supplied by the ISUAA or produced by PCI in connection with the 2010 ISU Alumni Directory.

The directory will only be made available to alumni of Iowa State University. The information contained in the 2010 directory will be published under the copyright of the Iowa State University Alumni Association and will contain the following language (or similar language) in the opening pages.

“This directory is for official use of the Iowa State University Alumni Association and for individual communication of a personal nature between those listed in the directory.  Use of the directory for any other purpose, including but not limited to, reproducing and sorting in a retrieval system by any means, electronic or mechanical, photocopying or use of the addresses or other information contained in this directory for any commercial or mass mailing (whether postal or electronic) is strictly prohibited and in direct violation of the copyright.”

Questions about Companion Airline Voucher:

I ordered a package containing the Companion Airline Voucher, but I haven’t received a voucher activiation card in the mail.  Why?
Vouchers are distributed within five (5) weeks of receipt of payment.  If five weeks have elapsed and you have not received your voucher, please call the PCI customer service desk at 1-800-982-1590 to request your voucher to be sent.

Are there any fees associated with the companion ticket offer?
The companion ticket applies to the base fare only-standard airline taxes and fees will apply to both tickets (companion ticket and purchased ticket).

How long do I have to activate and use the Certificate?
You must activate the certificate by completing the registration form and mailing it back to Promotions In Travel.  The registration date will be specified on the companion certificate.  Travel must be completed within one year after certificate is activated.

What do I need to do to make airline reservations?
You may make reservations online or by phone using the information on the activation notice.  Based on your travel request, the reservation system will search all participating carriers for availability and pricing.

What if there is a lower fare available online?
The vendor will provide the lowest price for the two tickets that are available and purchased through this program.  If a customer finds the same flights at a lower price online or through the airline’s own site, the customer should call the toll-free number listed on the activated voucher for assistance.

What if the travel system does not show availability for a specific airline, but the flight is available on the carrier’s website?
The certificate is subject to carrier participation.  Although the vendor contracts with most major carriers, it cannot guarantee a specific airline or routing.

Can I fly anywhere in the world?
No; this offer is only for domestic travel locations specified in the companion certificate.

Can I use frequent flyer miles?
Frequent flyer miles cannot be used to purchase the first ticket, however customers can earn frequent flyer miles on both the purchased and companion ticket if they’re a registered member with the airline.

Can I fly first-class?
No; this offer is only available for coach-class tickets.

Can I cancel or change reservations?
Once tickets have been booked, all cancellations and changes must be made directly with the carrier.  You may be subject to cancellation/change fees depending on the individual carrier’s policy.
