Barn Quilts
by Kevin and Sue Peyton

Reiman Ballroom, ISU Alumni Center
Thursday, March 23, 2017
Social--2:30 p.m., Program--3:00 p.m

During the last decade, barns and other structures across Iowa have been decorated with large colorful quilt blocks.  Barn quilts have spread exponentially across Iowa's landscape and throughout a majority of the other states.  Barn quilts have been called the largest grassroots art project to develop in this country.  Join other ISU retirees to enjoy a virtual tour of the Sac County Barn Quilts with Kevin Peyton and his mom, Sue Peyton.  The Peytons will discuss how the Sac County project developed, how barn quilts are designed and constructed and the impact on agri-tourism.  You will have an opportunity to ask any questions you might have about this popular public art form.

Kevin Peyton started the Sac County Barn Quilt project as a junior in high school in 2005.  His leadership with this project led to several state and national awards:  notably the Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student award in Iowa and the Prudential Spirit of Community award nationally.  Kevin holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from Iowa State University in Agricultural Engineering.  He has worked for Vermeer Manufacturing since 2012, first as a Hydraulic Engineer and currently as Senior Systems Engineer.  Kevin and his wife Lori live in Runnells, Iowa.

Sue Peyton holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from Oklahoma State University.   She earned her PhD from ISU in Higher Education.   She moved to Iowa in 1977 and worked as a 4-H Program Specialist and later as a Staff Development Leader for ISU Extension.  She left ISU in 1986 when she married  ISU Alum, Harold Peyton.  The Peytons feed cattle and farm in Sac County.  Both are employed by the family farm corporation, Peyton Inc.  Both have been active in their church and community, including serving as 4-H leaders and supporters.  They are parents of two children:  Kevin and Amy, who also graduated from ISU in 2012.  Sue is presently a trustee for the Iowa 4-H Foundation.
