Growing up, DeRionne Pollard was never certain what life had in store for her. But today, as one of the youngest CEOs in U.S. higher education, she has found her calling in community college administration. After 12 years as a professor, program director, and administrator at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Ill., Pollard was named president of Las Positas College in Livermore, Calif., in 2008. An outstanding teacher and student-focused administrator, the 38-year-old has distinguished herself in her professional field as well as in her communities.
Pollard came to the College of Lake County in 1995 and in 1997 developed the college’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. She rose to the position of assistant vice president for educational affairs in 2002 and was named vice president for educational affairs in 2005 upon completing her doctorate degree from Loyola University in Chicago. While in Lake County, she received the 2006 YWCA Woman of Achievement Award and was a 2007 Lake County Woman of Distinction. In 2006, she was named the Most Influential African American in Lake County.
Today Pollard is active in Rotary and the American Association of Community Colleges. She and her partner, Robyn Jones ’93 ’95, have a son named Myles.
