VISIONS Across America:
Portraits of Iowa State Alumni by Jim Heemstra
When Jim Heemstra, photographer, and Carole Gieseke, writer/editor, set out on a two-year journey across the United States to make portraits of Iowa State University alumni in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, they had no idea how emotionally tied they would become to those alumni – and how deeply they would be changed by the experience.
The VISIONS Across America portrait exhibition was a result of that journey. Jim and Carole encountered more than 120 alumni during their travels, and these are the people whose portraits showed the stunning diversity, strength, and character of Iowa State University alumni.
The exhibition ran in the Brunnier Art Museum from April 3 to August 9, 2014. Today more than 80 of the portraits can be found in building all across campus. To find the locations of these portraits, click on the thumbnail images below.
In addition, 30 portraits were included in a traveling exhibition to four cities (Twin Cities, Kansas City, Omaha, Denver) between fall 2014 and spring 2015.
