Debbie Bergstrom says a four-year degree wasn’t an option for her as a young student from Clarion, Iowa, in the 1970s. “But I always dreamed of going to Iowa State,” she said, “and I made sure both my children earned their degrees.”
Speak to Bergstrom for even a minute and you’d never know she wasn’t an Iowa State graduate – although she fell in love with one. The generosity she and her husband Steve, class of 1979, have shown toward Iowa State has been nothing short of remarkable. As major supporters of Cyclone athletics, particularly football and basketball, the Bergstroms provided the lead gift for the Bergstrom Football Complex, which was dedicated in 2012, as well as for the Steve and Debbie Bergstrom Indoor Training Facility, which was dedicated in 2004. They have also made gifts to benefit such Iowa State University projects and facilities as the Jacobson Athletic Building, the Sukup Basketball Complex, the Gerdin Business Building, the Business College Founders Club, the Benjamin and Patricia Allen Scholarship Fund, the Business Dean’s Advisory Council Fund and student-athlete scholarships.
“Iowa State is a major part of our lives,” said Bergstrom, although she and her family reside nearly 1,000 miles away in The Woodlands, Texas. “We are proud of our commitment, and I am so proud to receive this award.”
Bergstrom is the mother of Rebecca Bergstrom and Jeffrey Bergstrom, class of 2007 and four-year Iowa State University men’s basketball lettterwinner, as well as a proud grandmother of six. She spent most of her career as a homemaker and as a volunteer with numerous organizations, but she says most of her free time today is devoted to grandchildren.
Debbie and Steve Bergstrom are members of the Order of the Knoll William M. Beardshear Society and Campanile Society, Clyde Williams Society and the Cyclone Club. They received the Campanile Award from the Iowa State University Foundation in 2008 and are Iowa State University Alumni Association life members.
