“My years at Iowa State were truly formative ones for me. Iowa State provided great opportunities for personal and professional growth, and became the foundation for who I am today,” said Steve Schuler.
Recently retired, Schuler can look back on a successful career of 43 years in the accounting and financial services industries and pick out the high points. “I am most blessed to have a wonderful wife of 40 years and three children we are very proud of, two great sons-in-law and two beautiful grandchildren,” he said.
Schuler’s longtime support of Iowa State generally centers around securing a dynamic education within the College of Business through faculty support and study abroad scholarships. “Two of our children had wonderful, life-changing experiences from their study abroad opportunities,” said Schuler. “We always meet with our scholarship recipients before they leave and after they return to learn of their experiences. Our philanthropy has been a valuable investment!”
Schuler has served the Iowa State University Foundation as a governor since 2000 and on the board of directors from 2004-16, holding the position of board chair from 2009-11. He also served on the finance committee – twice as chair – and on the governance committee. On campus, he has served on the College of Business Dean’s Advisory Council since 1990, and was part of the College of Business dean’s search committee, resulting in the hiring of David Spalding.
In addition to this recognition, Schuler received the Iowa State University College of Business’ John DeVries Service Award
Long invested in his local community, Schuler is involved with the Iowa Association of Business and Industry’s Leadership Iowa Program and the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute, and is the current president of the Urbandale Education Foundation board of directors. He currently serves as the director of the school board for the Urbandale Community School District, where he formerly served as president. He is also a past president for the Iowa Chapter of Financial Executives International, and a past board member and president of the Ronald McDonald House in Des Moines.
Schuler and his wife, Rose Ann, are members of the Order of the Knoll William M. Beardshear Society and the Campanile Society. They are also members of the Iowa State University Alumni Association.
