Martha Lagomarcino Gleason 2017

Elementary Education ’80
Stephenville, Texas

Martha Lagomarcino Gleason’s longstanding commitment to Iowa State University and to the greater cause of expanding higher education is so much more than her famous Iowa State name – it’s a cherished family tradition that has made a major impact.

During Gleason’s tenure on the ISU Alumni Association Board of Directors – including her year as chair – she led the Association’s 125th anniversary celebration, approved the development of the ISU Alumni Center, helped revive the Alliance for Iowa State, created student programs like Cyclone Alley, and spearheaded an ambitious membership campaign. She remains highly involved with the Association as a member of its leadership honorary, The Circle, and annually conducts the performance evaluation for the Talbot Endowed ISUAA President and CEO.

Currently the chief human resources officer for First American Bank, Gleason has long been actively involved with education issues in a number of professional, volunteer, and advocacy capacities – including with the ISU School of Education and its Lagomarcino Scholarship Fund. She is also a past member of the Memorial Union Board of Directors and a sustaining member of Junior League.

A member of the Phi Delta Kappa Honorary, Gleason earned a master of science from Oklahoma State University in 1990 and a doctorate from the University of South Dakota in 1993. Among the honors she has received are Outstanding Teacher of the Year – Laurel Bay, S.C. (1985) and the Governor’s Scholarship for Doctoral Studies, University of Virginia (1990). Gleason says being named to the Dean’s List at Iowa State was also an especially meaningful honor because her father, Virgil, was then the College of Education dean and would write her personalized letters of congratulations.

Gleason and her husband, Thomas (’78 zoology), are ISU Alumni Association life members.
