Constance P. Hargrave 2017

PhD Curriculum & Instruction ’93
Ames, Iowa

Connie Hargrave is an associate professor in the Iowa State University School of Education who directs the life-changing Science Bound program that recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.

The goal of Science Bound, a pre-college program, is to respond to statewide and national shortages in the number of students of color who earn collegiate ASTEM (agriculture, scientific, technical, engineering, and math) degrees. Hargrave has led the program since 2006 and been deeply committed to the success of its young participants. Among her most notable contributions are creating a standardized high school curriculum for participating schools; establishing new, high-impact program learning requirements; creating the Science Bound Alumni Society; and increasing the overall number of Science Bound staff and participants who complete the 5-year program and go on to college. More than 130 Science Bound students have earned degrees from ISU, 75% in ASTEM fields. When Hargrave began working with the program it had 156 students in 14 Des Moines schools. Today, there are 412 participants representing 19 schools from 3 school districts, as well as 165 current Iowa State students pursuing ASTEM degrees.

One Science Bound alumnus described Hargrave’s leadership as “exceptionally supportive.”

“My dream of attending college to better my life was not achieved on my own,” he wrote, “but rather with the endless support and opportunities Dr. Hargrave and Science Bound have offered. Many of the Science Bound college students and alumni can attribute their research and internship experiences to Dr. Hargrave’s vast network and her advocacy on behalf of students.”

Hargrave earned her bachelor’s degree from Evangel University in 1987 and a master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1989. She currently moonlights as a stand-up comedian.
