Donald C. Beitz 2017

Ames, Iowa

Donald Beitz (A) has spent 50 years on the Iowa State faculty and currently holds the title of Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Agriculture. Beitz fondly remembers the day he was invited to interview at Iowa State, the same day he planned to accept an offer from another land-grant institution. The rest, as they say, is history: Over five decades, Beitz has served as major professor to more than 100 graduate students, advised approximately 150 undergraduate students, and taught more than 11,000 students about nutritional biochemistry. The recipient of numerous national and local honors for teaching, research, and advising, Beitz has published 273 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 329 abstracts, and he also holds nine patents. He is the past president of the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology, American Dairy Science Association, and the Federation of Animal Science Societies.

But at the end of the day Beitz’s “greatest pride,” according to nominators, is participating “in the scientific and personal development of his students.”
