Stephen Pett 2017

Santa Fe, N.M.

Stephen Pett retired in 2014 after 31 years as an associate professor of English at Iowa State, where in 2006 he became coordinator of the university’s influential MFA program in creative writing and the environment. Being one of the architects of that program – along with the related acquisition of the Everett Casey Nature Center and Reserve, Pett says, is one of his proudest professional accomplishments. Getting students out into what one nominator describes as “the living classroom,” has been a life-changing opportunity for many – including also the chance to contribute to Pett’s longtime literary journal, Flyway: Journal of Writing and Environment.

“Dr. Pett always made sure his students saw the connection of writing to the world around us and made us feel and know that our writing and our voices mattered,” wrote one of his nominators. “He is someone who never stopped fighting for his students and someone who genuinely wants everyone to succeed. I will be forever grateful to Dr. Pett’s influences on my writing and teaching.”
